Tidying your room is actually reshaping your life!
People with messy rooms often say things like this: “The room doesn't need to be too tidy. Cleaning is exhausting and a waste of time, plus it takes away from earning money. Living in a messy room is actually more comfortable.” If someone suggests tidying up, they might respond, “Don't touch my stuff. I know exactly where everything goes. If you move it, I'll never find it again.” The truth is, your brain filters items based on your goals. Things you don't need or care about are likely to be selectively blocked out. Once, we helped a client organize her living room and dining area. A few days later, she called asking where the lottery tickets had been that were on the dining table. We combed through photos and videos from before and after the organization, but couldn't find them. The ticket wasn't worth much, but she believed the numbers she picked were perfect—a surefire jackpot. To her, it felt like losing millions. Later, when we organized her son's room, we found the ticket tucked inside a card holder on his desk. It was exactly the one she'd been searching for.
